Ferrari launches new F150 in Maranello
28 January 2011

Ferrari has become the first F1 team to reveal its 2011 car, with the covers having come off the F150 at its Maranello base on Friday morning. Notable visible changes are the squad’s new logo on the engine cover plus Italian flags on the rear wing and turning vanes to commemorate the 150th anniversary since the unification of Italy.

After narrowly losing out on the 2010 title in Abu Dhabi last November, determination to succeed is high ahead of the upcoming campaign.

As well as the obvious optical differences, this year’s F150 also carries a number of significant technical and aerodynamic modifications:

- Front of car raised to improve airflow, driver sitting slightly higher up as a result
- A stronger indention of the sidepods
- Pirelli tyres
- Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) returns
- New moveable rear wing

Alonso debuts Ferrari F150 on-track
28 January 2011

Although private testing is strictly outlawed nowadays, Ferrari was able to make best use of a promotional filming opportunity on Friday as Fernando Alonso debuted the brand-new car at Fiorano.

Following the official launch ceremony in the morning, Spaniard Alonso became the first driver to get behind the wheel as the Scuderia also debuted its 458 road model.

Ferrari is yet to reveal its schedule for the three days of Valencia testing between Tuesday and Thursday of next week, with the team having been fastest in the opening test session of 2010 at the same Ricardo Tormo circuit.

Significant updates planned for Ferrari'
9 March 2011

Ferrari are set to be the next team to run a raft of new features as Barcelona testing continues this week, with the Maranello squad having elected to skip Tuesday in a swap with Saturday. The newly-named 150° Italia, following an aerodynamics test in Italy with Superleague Champion Davide Rigon at the wheel, will now be subject to a selection of updates.

Felipe Massa this morning

As reported by Italy’s Autosprint, the car sported a selection of new aerodynamic features in the Rigon test for the rear wing, diffuser and bodywork. The Scuderia are believed to now be running Red Bull and Toro Rosso-like slits on the outside of the car’s body.

Ferrari begins its final pre-season test at the Circuit de Catalunya on Wednesday, with Felipe Massa remaining in action until tomorrow evening before Fernando Alonso drives on Friday and Saturday, when larger crowds are expected to flock to the venue in order to view their leading national representative.

Ferrari

Alonso also happy with Ferrari updates
14 March 2011
Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso has echoed the sentiments of team-mate Felipe Massa by declaring himself pleased with Ferrari’s final car updates for pre-season testing, which were in action at the Circuit de Catalunya between Wednesday and Saturday of last week.

“Once again, the car has proved to be very reliable, which is always good news,” the former double World Champion of 2005 and 2006 said following a soaking day on-track on which he recorded no lap time.

“The updates that the team prepared for this last test have improved the handling of the car and today we managed to do a good simulation of a Grand Prix weekend, with reasonable lap times.”

However, the Spaniard is still unable to place the Scuderia in the general Formula 1 pecking order. “Where are we compared to the others? Today, we are all together here in Barcelona…” he jested. “But, joking apart, we will only discover the truth in Melbourne.”

Massa praises Ferrari car upgrades

Felipe Massa
Felipe Massa expressed his admiration over Ferrari’s latest car modifications in Barcelona on Thursday, with the Brazilian having posted the second fastest lap time to Sergio Pérez whilst running an revised exhaust system.

“It's better, with just more downforce on the car, and the more downforce you have, the better,” the Brazilian, whose best lap time was three tenths off the leading Sauber, explained to the media, “especially with these tyres which degrade quite a lot.

“It’s a big package and works well; I think it will be more or less the same package we have for the first race, so now we're working hard on the next improvement as we know how important that is during the season. What we’ve brought here was an improvement, though, and the car is just better, with better grip and better downforce.”

He added that Red Bull Racing are still the team to beat. “First of all they’re the team which won last year and secondly they’re very quick here. Sebastian (Vettel) did a very quick lap time yesterday, so I’m pointing towards Red Bull."

Alonso: We cannot be happy with this result
26 March 2011
2011 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Saturday qualifying results

Fernando Alonso is both surprised and disappointed to be starting Sunday’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix from the third row of the grid. Ironically, after the happenings of last year’s Abu Dhabi race, the leading Ferrari will be viewing the five red lights alongside Vitaly Petrov’s Renault.

“Clearly, we cannot be happy with this result, but we must not immediately make a drama out of it,” said the former double World Champion of 2005 and 2006. “We definitely did not get the most out of the car and we have to understand the reasons for that.

“Compared to what we saw at the tests, here we ended up much closer to cars that had been a long way off in Spain. We went well yesterday and we had a good feeling for the car, while right from this morning the situation changed, obviously for the worse. Now let’s see how the race turns out.

“In testing and in yesterday’s free practice, our performance over a long run was good and we were definitely closer to those who today seem to be a long way off.

Ferrari covered more miles than anybody else in pre-season testing

"Fifth place on the grid is not too bad and it means I am in a position to fight for a podium finish in a race which is still wide open - if you only think what happened last year, with Kubica starting from sixth or seventh and finishing second.

“McLaren seems to have made a good step forward but you should not dismiss Mercedes either, who were impressive at the last Barcelona test.”

Massa lacks grip after Q3 spin
26 March 2011
2011 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Saturday qualifying results

It is widely known that Felipe Massa struggled to build up temperatures in Bridgestone’s tyres of last year. However, the Brazilian also experienced difficulties with the new Pirelli products in Australian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday.

“We were less competitive than we could rightly have expected and there’s no doubt about that,” the Brazilian began. “Sure, I did not think I would be fighting for pole, especially when you look at the very quick time that Vettel did, but I had hoped to be higher up the order.

Massa starts 8th in Australia

“We had problems with grip on both the Hard and the Soft tyres on a surface where the tyres wear a lot less than we have seen in winter testing and they provide less grip on the first lap, or at least they do with our car.

“Now we have to prepare as well as possible for tomorrow’s race, when pure speed will not be the only thing that counts, with reliability and team work being especially important.

“My spin in Q3? When I came out of pit lane, I accelerated and the tyres were evidently still too cold; the set was not damaged for the race, but it was definitely not a help on my only flying lap.”

Alonso: We have to improve
27 March 2011
2011 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Fernando Alonso has stated that his Ferrari team must improve if it is to fight for this year’s titles, with the Spaniard not happy to settle for ‘third or fourth’ place finishes. After falling back to tenth from his fifth place grid slot by the end of Lap 1, the two-times Champion went on to fight his way back through to fourth by the chequered flag.

"If you just look at the classification, this is not such a bad result; yes we have lost ground to Vettel and Hamilton, although we have done better than Webber and Button,” Alonso commented after the race. "Here at Albert Park, it seems that I have a season ticket for fourth place, as it’s the third time in four years that I’ve finished the race in this position.

"At the start there was a bit of confusion: I got away well, but then Button headed for me and I had to go wide to avoid a collision. The strategy was just right and it helped me to make up some places. Maybe if I hadn’t ended up immediately in traffic, I could have tried to go for two stops but given how things went, we made the best decision.

"We are in the right zone for us to be able to win a title, but definitely not if we keep finishing third or fourth. We have to improve, we know that, but it’s still too early to make any predictions."

Brazilian team-mate Felipe Massa also shared his feelings: "At the start things got off on the right foot with a nice start and good defending from Button’s attacking moves. Then we tried to bring forward the use of the hard tyres, but that move did not pay off and we had to make the third stop towards the end, which lost me a few places.

"In the second part, I suffered a lot with degradation on the rear tyres and I could not keep up a good pace. New elements such as the rear wing worked as they should: we definitely saw more overtaking than last year."

Speaking about the on-track battle with Button he added: “It was very tight: when he passed me, cutting the chicane, I expected him to be penalised. I am a bit disappointed with the result and the overall performance this weekend.”

Button should know the rules, says Massa
1 April 2011

Felipe Massa has responded to Jenson Button’s post-Australian Grand Prix comments by saying that the 2009 World Champion should have known to back off after passing the Brazilian illegally. Although the McLaren driver argued that he was ahead of the Ferrari through Turn 11, the Englishman cut inside Turn 12 to overtake.

While Button’s corner-cutting did result in a drive-through penalty, Massa was unable to attempt another move after losing momentum and also being passed by team-mate Fernando Alonso.

After taking his drive-through penalty, Button passed Massa again later in the race

“During the battle, I feel I did a very good job of defending my position by using KERS, knowing how to save the power until it was time to use it at exactly the right moment so he could not get past,” Massa explained on Friday. “But it’s definitely easier to be the attacker than the defender in this situation.

“I’m sure it was exciting for the spectators and it was a shame that after the incident I didn’t have the pace to keep fighting him (Button). I expected him to give back the position after he got by because the rules are clear.

“You must do that if you cut a chicane and Jenson is experienced enough to know that, without having to wait for the team to tell him what to do. After he got by, Alonso also got past me, as I ended up being quite slow because of the fight with Jenson.”

DRS wasn’t working, Alonso confirms
10 April 2011
2011 Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Fernando Alonso has verified that his Drag Reduction System (DRS, also known as Adjustable Rear Wing) failed to operate correctly in Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix, after which he received a 20-second time penalty for his incident with Lewis Hamilton.

“It was a good fight with Lewis, it was very close,” the Ferrari driver explained to reporters after the race.

“But my moving wing wasn’t working, so I couldn’t do anything on the straights and had to try in the corners. Unfortunately I then lost a piece of my front wing, so had to pit, otherwise I could have been on the podium.”

Massa: I could have been on the podium
10 April 2011
2011 Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Felipe Massa’s feelings were clear on Sunday evening, having been the leading Ferrari driver at Sepang for the third consecutive year. After progressing to the top five from seventh on the grid, the Brazilian spoke of the Italian team’s lack of pace. He also laments a long pit-stop which resulted in him falling behind Jenson Button, who went on to finish second.

“We definitely have to improve the car, but it’s equally true that our race pace is very different to our performance in qualifying,” Massa explained. “That’s a positive, but we know that grid position is nevertheless very important, so we have to move forward on this front.
“As for my race, it was a shame to have lost valuable seconds at my first pit-stop - but for that problem, I could have fought my way to a podium place.

“With the Soft tyres my pace was very good; less so on the Hards to such an extent that Webber, who in addition had made one more stop, managed to pass me.”

Ferrari rear wing declared illegal
21 May 2011

Ferrari will be forced to use its Turkey-specification rear wing for the rest of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend after it was decided by the FIA that its new design does not adhere to the technical regulations. The Italian squad introduced the wing during practice yesterday, but Charlie Whiting and the FIA stewards declared it illegal when taking a closer look at the interpretation.

After the opening day of practice in Barcelona, Whiting talked about the possibility of banning the design, saying: "That will depend on what we will decide tonight (Friday). It’s a very clever interpretation of the rules, and we’ve got to decide whether we think it’s a good interpretation of the rules. It will be clear tomorrow."

Whiting confirmed that no complaints were made by Ferrari's rivals, but highlighted in the evening where the then suspected issue was.

"It is article 3.10.3, which deals with slot gaps separators, the devices which are normally just vertical, which keep the distance between the profiles constant," he explained. "The fact that the separators have to totally encircle the profiles ensures the profiles remain the same.

"We had an issue with changing profiles a few years ago. The separators can't be more than 200mm apart. It's an alternative interpretation of that rule that we are currently discussing."
