Toro Rosso pulls covers from STR6
1 February 2011

Following Red Bull Racing’s launch just half an hour before, sister team Toro Rosso has revealed its own 2011 contender in Valencia. This year’s STR6, again powered by a Ferrari engine, will be driven by Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari, team-mates for a second consecutive full season.

Buemi and Alguersuari reveal the new STR6 in Valencia
2010 saw Toro Rosso endure what was statistically its worst season since entering Formula 1 in 2006, with 13 points yielding only ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship, ahead of only the trio of F1’s new teams.

In 2011, key team figures Franz Tost and Giorgio Ascanelli remain on-board as Team Principal and Technical Director.

This year marks the second since the squad has been required to develop a car from scratch in its entirety, with previous chassis having been supported by the subsidiary Red Bull Technology company.

Ricciardo to drive at Jerez on Thursday
9 February 2011

Scuderia Toro Rosso has informed GPUpdate.net that official test and reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia will be kicking off its Jerez testing programme on Thursday morning before handing the car over to Jaime Alguersuari.

After finishing runner-up in last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 battle, Ricciardo has signed with Toro Rosso and in theory will drive in all Friday first practice sessions on 2011 Formula 1 race weekends, replacing one regular driver on an alternating basis.

However, with his World Series by Renault commitments continuing, the 21-year-old from Perth may be forced to miss some F1 events.

Toro Rosso’s Jerez line-up looks like this:

Thursday morning: Daniel RICCIARDO
Thursday afternoon: Jaime ALGUERSUARI
Friday: Jaime ALGUERSUARI
Saturday: Sébastien BUEMI
Sunday: Sébastien BUEMI

Ricciardo to drive in Barcelona as well
17 February 2011

Toro Rosso has informed GPUpdate.net that Australian third driver Daniel Ricciardo will be enjoying a second outing in its car as Formula 1 descends on Barcelona for the third of four pre-season test sessions this week.

So far in 2011, last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 runner-up has driven for one morning in Valencia and the 21-year-old will be doing the same at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday before handing the car over to team-mate Sébastien Buemi, who will complete the test. In the cockpit for the first two days will be local favourite Jaime Alguersuari.

Toro Rosso’s Barcelona programme looks like this:

Friday Jaime Alguersuari
Saturday Jaime Alguersuari
Sunday morning Daniel Ricciardo
Sunday afternoon Sébastien Buemi
Monday Sébastien Buemi

Toro Rosso

Interview with Toro Rosso's Sébastien Buemi
1 February 2011

Sébastien Buemi will be competing in his third season for Toro Rosso in 2011, with the Swiss driver retaining his seat in the sport after finishing 16th in last year's championship, collecting a total of eight points. The 22-year-old spoke to GPUpdate.net about his feelings ahead of the upcoming season, and expressed his desire to make the Faenza-based outfit a regular points scorer.

How important is this season for you, Sébastien?

I would say that it’s an important season, like all of them; I don’t think it’s a more important season than others, but in the end we’ll just be trying our best to put everything together, to have good results and finish in the points as much as possible.

There are a number of drivers, Daniel Ricciardo to name one, who are looking at possible race seats with this team for next year. Does that put the pressure up for you?

For what’s happening next season, I don’t know – we need to concentrate first on this one, it’s a long season with 20 races and we’ll see what we can do.

This is the second season in which Toro Rosso has to fully develop its own car, without the aid of the subsidiary Red Bull Technology company – how are things coming on?

The team is doing a good job at the moment and we have some evolutions of the car coming and it’s a lot more under control in comparison to what we were doing last year. Now we have a lot more experience and a lot more time, so it should be interesting but we need to wait and see what the car can do.

A number of drivers are complaining that they will be too busy in the cockpit this year, with KERS returning and adjustable rear wings being introduced – are you in agreement?

It’s definitely not going to be easy but the first time they introduced KERS and then adjustable front wings everybody said it would be difficult. So it is new, it is not easy and sometimes you may be over the limit, but it’s the same for everybody and you’ll need to use it all to avoid others being quicker.

Alguersuari targeting Force India and Sauber
10 March 2011

Jaime Alguersuari believes that Toro Rosso are currently set to be running in the heart of the midfield this year, with the Spaniard hoping to soon improve for points finishes in 2011. Since last season, when the squad could manage no more than ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship, drivers are required to finish in the top ten to score.

“We can’t aspire to be up there with Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren but we can aim to beat Force India and Sauber,” the Catalan explained to Spain’s El País newspaper, with the Faenza-based outfit formerly known as Minardi having developed a radical ‘double-decker’ floor for its new car.

“In reality, we’re looking to be between 12th and 14th on the grid and finishing the World Championship ahead of those two teams - then we'll be satisfied.”

Buemi happy to make Q3
26 March 2011
2011 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Saturday qualifying results
Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari were able to convert their promising winter testing form into a strong result for Toro Rosso during the opening qualifying session of the season in Melbourne on Saturday, with the pair set to lineup on tomorrow's starting grid in tenth and 12th respectively.

The Italian squad's long run of failing to make it into the third and final stage of qualifying was also ended at the 5.027-km (3.124-mi), with Buemi making it through for the first time since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend back in 2009.

"I am very happy to be back in Q3, as we had not been there since 2009," Buemi said. "In the end, I had no more new tyres, but all the same, I have to say thanks to the team for doing such a good job and it shows we are on the right road.

“Let’s hope we can continue to do well in the race tomorrow and from what we have seen of our pace in free practice, I think that should be possible. I could not have hoped for a better start to the season, being among the ten fastest cars on the grid. My quick lap was good and I don’t think I could have done any better."

Alguersuari added: "I am quite happy, although I have to congratulate my team-mate on doing a better job than me. This is a good result for the team and promising for tomorrow, when my main target will be to score points. The team did a great job during the winter to produce a fast car and this is the first result of that, which I hope we can continue to improve on in the next few races."

Buemi to chat with Alguersuari following collision
27 March 2011
2011 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Sébastien Buemi kick-started Toro Rosso’s 2011 campaign with a points finish in Melbourne, matching his grid position by coming home tenth and therefore scoring more Australian points, as he did on his debut in 2009. For this year, the Italian team is making best use of a revolution double-decker floor designed by Giorgio Ascanelli.

Since the chequered flag, it has also emerged that the pair of Faenza-built cars came to blows at Turn 1, with Jaime Alguersuari then contacting with Michael Schumacher two corners later.

“It’s not too bad finishing tenth, after making it to Q3 yesterday, but I think I could have done better, maybe an eighth or ninth place was possible,” Switzerland’s Buemi admitted following the 58-lap race.

“It’s a shame that my team-mate and I made contact at the first corner. It’s not the first time it has happened, so I think we will be having a chat about it after I’ve watched a recording of the incident!

“Towards the end, I was not able to hold off Massa, who was much quicker than me at that point, but I am still pleased with the result. Overall, I would say we are definitely more competitive than last year and now we must continue to move forward, bringing further improvements to the car.

“It has been a positive start and we will have a lot to learn from analysing this whole weekend and then we will see what we can do in Malaysia.”

Alguersuari blames Buemi for Heidfeld collision
30 March 2011

Since the end of the Australian Grand Prix, Nick Heidfeld has been attempting to discover which Toro Rosso driver caused significant damage to his car. After starting a lowly 18th, the German struggled to 12th on Sunday as Renault team-mate Vitaly Petrov managed a podium finish in third position.

Unseen by television cameras but explained in Renault’s post-race press release, Heidfeld’s progress was severely thwarted by car damage.

After the race, Buemi was already unhappy with team-mate Alguersuari’s driving

“After the first corner I was already in 11th place,” he explained to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, adding that accident damage resulted in the loss of KERS and severe imbalance of the car, thus causing a drop of one and a half seconds per lap. “Points definitively would have been there. Then I was hit by a Toro Rosso at Turns 10 and 11, but I don’t know who it was.”

After Sébastien Buemi pointed the finger at Alguersuari for their inter-team touch at Turn 2 on the opening lap, the Spaniard has responded by claiming it was the Swiss who came to blows with Heidfeld.

“It wasn’t me,” the Barcelona man said. “I did hit Schumacher (at Turn 3) and I'm sorry for that, but I’m not responsible for the incident with Heidfeld. I was a bit behind and saw exactly what happened: Seb was fighting with the Renault at Turn 10 and then hit him at Turn 11.”

It is widely known that Toro Rosso is considering the promotion of reserve driver Daniel Riccardo to a race seat for 2012, replacing either Buemi or Alguersuari.

Penalty a bit too severe, says Buemi
10 April 2011
2011 Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Sébastien Buemi has criticised the stewards’ decision to hand him a 10-second stop/go penalty in Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix, dropping the Toro Rosso driver back to 13th position after speeding in the pit lane. However, the Swiss driver feels a drive-through penalty would have been more appropriate.

“I made a good start, passing Rosberg and was running well, closing up on Kobayashi and Schumacher, but at my first pit-stop I had the impression that the pit lane speed limiter had not been engaged,” he explained shortly after the race.

“I immediately pressed it again, which deactivated it, so I speeded in the pit lane and picked up a ten second stop-go penalty, which I felt was a bit severe, as usually you get a drive-through penalty which loses you less time.

“After that I gave it my best shot but it was not enough to get a reward for the work, as I felt we could have got the Force Indias and at least finished ninth. I only changed tyres twice and it’s true that the last few laps were very difficult because of the degradation.”

Toro Rosso ecstatic with double points finish
31 July 2011
2011 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results
Scuderia Toro Rosso were delighted with a double points finish in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, with Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari finishing in eighth and tenth positions. However, Force India’s advantage for seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship has increased to four points after Paul di Resta came home seventh.

“A fantastic race, one of my best,” Switzerland’s Buemi began. “Starting right from the back row, I got a super start and I passed around ten cars on the opening lap. After that, I got into a good rhythm and was able to pass more cars on the damp track. Then, as it began to dry, I felt the setup was not perfect and I had too much understeer.

“I tried not to get upset about it and then the team did a very good job, working at the pit-stop to change the wing angle which helped me to save the tyres better and the stop was quick enough for me to jump up a few places. When the rain returned, I again felt the car was working very well and I was able to run at a good pace again, which helped me get into the points.”

“Congratulations to the team for getting both cars into the points,” Spaniard Alguersuari added. “Today, it was clear in my mind that I could have finished seventh. I made one of my pit stops just as it began raining slightly again. With the tyres not yet up to temperature, at that point it was hard to stay on the track and I went off.

“But I carried on fighting and towards the end it was unfortunate that I lost another place after the collision with Kobayashi, but as a team performance we can consider we did a good job today, so it is a nice way to go into the short break, although I can’t wait to start again at Spa.”
